Astrakhan Reserve boasts rare and beautiful insects. The delta is filled with dragonflies, distinguished by their bright colors. These nimble insects, darting like flashes of light under the sun, are found everywhere in the lower Volga delta.

About 400 species of beetles live in the lower Volga delta.    They include ground beetles, leaf beetles and ladybugs.  The most abundant are water bugs, numbering about 100 species.

Butterflies are heterogeneous and diverse.  Among those found in the reserve are species characteristic of steppe or desert landscapes.  Forest-dwelling butterflies are also present.  In all, about 180 butterfly species are found in the delta.  Visitors enjoy looking for and photographing them.

Spiders are also among the reserve’s inhabitants.  Some of them are quite large.  There are also poisonous species, but they generally pose no danger to visitors.
